Improve Bathroom Space For Walkers

Seniors or people struggling with walking often have to revert to walkers to get around the house. This can create problems with various barriers that the average house throws at them. One area that can be quite troubling is the washroom and in particular the toilet area. To save space in a washroom, many homes are designed to have the toilet tucked along a wall, which can prove to be quite difficult to access for someone in a walker. On a recent assessment, the owner was thinking of changing their entire bathroom but didn’t have the time or money to do so and therefore I suggested changing the orientation of the toilet. By just changing the tank to a triangular type and angling the toilet towards the centre of the bathroom, the person has a lot more space in and around the toilet.

Before – Standard tank and setup.
After – Triangular tank and angle change.
