AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) has a lot of great information on things you can do around your home and in your community – to make living at home easier. This article about – Is Your Home “Home Fit” provides a great checklist of things to think about and do around your home. Is there at least one step-free entrance into your home

We’ve put a few of the items to check down below but looking through the whole article and even the website can be quite useful. We cover all of the items below in our home inspections of course, but nothing wrong with getting it done now!

*** Is there a bedroom, full bathroom and kitchen on the main level?

*** Is there at least one step-free entrance into your home?

*** Are the interior doorways at least 36” wide?

*** Is there a fire extinguisher within reach of the oven or stove?

*** Are the kitchen cabinets and shelves easy for you to reach?

*** If you use a step stool, does it have nonslip surfaces and a handle you can grip

*** Are there secure handrails on both sides of the stairs?

*** Are your staircases well lighted? 

*** Are your exterior walkways free of tripping hazards?

*** Do all of your area rugs have non-slip grips to prevent tripping or slipping

*** Do you have a shower with a step-free entry

*** Are there smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on each floor of the home?Can a smoke and carbon monoxide detector be heard in every bedroom?
